Has it been a while since your last dental check-up and cleaning? If so, it’s natural to be a little apprehensive about returning to the treatment chair. But the good news is that no matter why you’ve been away or what’s motivated you to return, your upcoming visit is nothing to be afraid of. Here’s what you can expect to happen on your next trip to the dentist!
Extended Cleaning
When you first arrive at your dental appointment, your hygienist will ensure that you are comfortable before beginning to clean your teeth. If it’s been a while since your last visit, you may have more plaque buildup than usual, requiring an extended cleaning. He or she may also want to measure the pockets of gum tissue surrounding your teeth. If they are determined to be too deep, you may need a different type of cleaning called root scaling and planing, which is ideal for patients with gum recession.
X-Rays
Next, your dentist will have the team take some X-rays to ensure that your teeth and jawbones are healthy. These can show your dentist much more than they can see with just their eyes, including hidden cavities, infection, and impactions. They can also be helpful as a side-by-side comparison to your old X-rays, so your dentist can see how much (if at all) your teeth have changed since your last visit.

Comprehensive Exam
Once your dentist has reviewed your X-rays, he will examine your mouth in person, taking a closer look at any areas of concern. If he notices any abnormalities like cavities, he will note this on your chart so your dental team can create a treatment plan to correct them. This is also a perfect opportunity for you to voice your own concerns or ask any questions you may have about your oral health.
Consultation & Review
Finally, once your exam is completed, your dental team will go over any recommendations, including future treatments, new products, and follow-up appointments. Then, unless you still need to have any procedures done that day, you will be free to go and show off your clean, healthy smile!
