5 Common Post-Op Questions About Dental Implant Surgery

Dental implant tooth replacement model explained by a dentist at Arrowhead Dentistry in Arizona

Dental implant surgery is an exciting step in your smile restoration journey, and the one that many patients have the most questions and concerns about. The great news is that this increasingly common procedure is very safe and effective. In fact, today’s dental implants boast an impressive 95 percent success rate. Here are a few common queries patients ask before their upcoming procedure. If you don’t see yours listed below, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dentist for more information!

Is dental implant surgery painful?

The great news is that no, your dental implant surgery itself should not be painful, because your dentist will completely numb the area to be treated before any work begins. However, you should expect some discomfort once the numbing wears off post-operation. This can be managed by taking over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers, and by applying cold compresses to the face over the treatment area. Pain should begin to lessen within five to seven days; however, if it does not, please contact your dentist.

Can I drive myself home?

No, it is not a good idea to drive yourself home from dental implant surgery, even if you haven’t had sedation. In fact, your dentist recommends you abstain from driving or operating any other heavy machinery for at least 24 hours following your procedure.

When can I eat again?

Wait at least an hour after surgery to attempt eating, and when you do, be sure to stick to a soft diet for the first 24 hours. Furthermore, avoid anything too hot or spicy, and don’t drink from a straw until you’ve gotten approval from your dentist. You will likely want to eat soft food for at least a few days, but you can resume your regular diet once you feel comfortable. Still, it is recommended that you limit anything too crunchy, sticky, or spicy for as long as possible.

Can I brush my teeth?

After 24 hours, it should be safe to brush your teeth. In fact, caring for your oral hygiene is essential to successful osseointegration. However, be sure to be very careful when brushing around your surgical sites. You should also rinse frequently with saltwater to keep your mouth clean and soothe your incisions. To make this, just mix ¼ teaspoon of salt with a cup of warm water. Be sure to avoid using any mouthwashes or gargling with hydrogen peroxide for the next 14 days.

When can I get my new teeth?

If you’ve had lower dental implants placed, the average wait time for crowns is about four months, and for upper teeth, about six months. However, the exact time depends on your individual mouth and how quickly you’ve healed. To ensure this process goes smoothly, be sure to stick to the aftercare instructions provided by your dentist before your surgery.

Remember, dental implant surgery is a big deal, and it’s natural to have lots of questions beforehand. The great news is that your dentist wants you to feel comfortable and confident about your upcoming procedure, so if you have any questions prior to the big day, please don’t hesitate to ask!
